Monument to Panikovskiy

A relatively new tradition in Kiev is to set up small monuments dedicated to famous movies and books characters.

One of such type of sculpture is bronze monument to Michael Panikovskii – Ilf and Petrov “The Golden Calf” book character.

It was installed on the corner of two central streets. It is the exact place where “worked” seeming blind Panikovskii, whose “job” was to ask rich passerby to help him to cross the road and then to clean out passerby’s pockets.

СIt is a good tradition to drop a coin next to Panikovskii’s feet – it leads to prosperity, as the legend tells. But, to someone who searches a coin under the foot of “the great blind man”, a fig is shown – it is engraved on his sole as a joke of monument’s authors.
